The June 2024 issue of Windsor Business warns that Canada may be entering a stagflationary period—rising inflation with weak or negative real growth. Despite leading the G7 in population growth, economic output and living standards are stagnating. Household savings have collapsed, current account deficits persist, and a National Bank report suggests Canada is caught in a population trap. The result may be a socio-economic barbell, where gains concentrate at the extremes while the middle class is increasingly squeezed.
